MILFORD — For Ben and Jenn Rowan, being engaged in the community is more than a hope. It’s their motto.
The newly married couple celebrated the ribbon cutting and grand opening of Lifecycle Saturday afternoon with a party focused on engaging with the community around them.
Fellow Milford-resident Osiel Villalobos acted as DJ for the event while PoBoys’ food truck offered up good eats. Milford’s Park & Recreations Director Brad Dennehy and longtime customer of Mr. Rowan’s was also at the shop located just down the street from his own office to help where needed.
More often than not, Mr. Dennehy was seen greeting other visitors and testing out the new shop.
“If you can’t dance in a bike shop, where can you dance,” he asked after taking Ms. Rowan for a spin around the main room.
Ms. Rowan said the couple hopes the shop becomes a “community hub.”
She added, “And it’s already started. We’re a stop for local bike riders to come and get some water before they head off again. Just the other day, we had a group of people in here at the counter. There was pizza and we just had fun.”
Lifecycle will be teaming up with Abbott’s Mill Nature Center in the future by providing bike rides from their location at 10 SE Front Street in downtown Milford to the nature center about four miles away. Other tours will include the Riverwalk and other areas around town.
Abbott’s Mill’s Site Director Matt Babbitt was on hand for the grand opening to help with raffles benefitting the nature center.
“Our goal is to be a part of the community, both the bicycle community and the local Milford community,” Mr. Rowan said. “We’re excited to be a part of the things Milford has going on.”
The Rowans hope to also focus on advocacy and awareness to issues relating to cycling, such as local transportation routes.
“We’re research geeks,” Ms. Rowan chuckled. “We have a lot of research on how downtowns boom when pedestrians come downtown.”
Lifecycle will feature bicycles built in-shop by the couple, including everything from traditional bicycles to terratrikes. Repairs can also be done at the new store.
