Editor’s Note: Event organizers alerted The Chronicle after printing that the date printed (Saturday, May 6) will probably be changing due to permitting issues and local construction. Stay tuned for another event date.
MILFORD — If there’s one thing missing in Milford, it might just be the Kentucky Derby. And hats, according to Cat Perfetti and Lauren Bigelow.
But fear not, event fans: Milford will not miss out on the fun this year.
The pair of business owners, Ms. Perfetti with Delaware Branding Company and Ms. Bigelow with her own marketing firm, recently collaborated to create the Greater Milford Hospitality Association which is hosting the event.
The Julep Jaunt will be a Kentucky Derby themed scavenger hunt and bar crawl. The event date remains to be determined.
Upgraded registrations are available for $20 per commemorative mug. In return, the racer will get $3 Mint Juleps at participating locations throughout the day and discounts during the bar crawl. $10 from each cup will benefit the Greater Milford Hospitality Association.
A T-shirt can also be purchased at Delaware Branding Company for $15 each for a generic shirt, $20 each for a shirt with a team name written on the back or $75 for a set of four team shirts.
Once the event begins at 2 p.m. in the city parking lot behind the new Touch of Italy location, teams will receive their scavenger hunts.
The hunt will take participants throughout the downtown area, asking them to complete a variety of tasks at mystery shops. Each stop and activity is worth points based on difficulty level.
The team with the most points and makes it back to the starting location by 4:30 p.m. will be the winner of this year’s Julep Jaunt.
The event will also feature live music by Human Connection and food trucks at the main location. Contests, such as best hat and best beer belly, will also be held throughout the event at the main location.
Prizes are still in the works, however, Ms. Bigelow says they know the winner of the best beer belly contest will receive either a three-month certificate to Mispillion Fitness or merchandise from Mispillion River Brewing.
“They might even get both. They can either choose to fix the belly or maintain it,” she chuckled.
Businesses currently participating in the event include Lifecycle, Mispillion Fitness, Abbott’s Grill, Arena’s, Park Place, Sling With Me, Delaware Branding Company and Mispillion River Brewing.
The organizers are open to adding more participating businesses.
“The Greater Milford Hospitality Association exists to foster collaborative relationships between small businesses for the betterment of the community,” Ms. Bigelow said.
“Essentially, what we saw was an opportunity. We’re all friends outside of our businesses. It seems a little strange that I never had the opportunity to work with Ramsey [Schrader of Arena’s] or Cat in a community setting.”
The nonprofit hopes to meet once a month to discuss business-related issues and host a couple of events a year. Local business owners or representatives with decision-making power are invited to participate.
Ms. Perfetti explained as an owner, along with her husband Mike, of a business just off of Walnut St., they are often left out of local events.
“People just don’t go around that corner,” she said.
“This year, they finally put out a sign during the Holiday Stroll saying that the stroll continued down this way, but it didn’t help much. It’s a step, though.”
Ultimately, the pair of small business owners hope to help facilitate growth for businesses in Milford.
“We believe we can represent our own interests better than someone else. We’re not trying to replace other groups. We’re trying to augment them,” Ms. Bigelow said.
“We want to bring more people to Milford and engage the newest members of the community moving in as a result of Bayhealth and the new health expansion. They have a choice in their living location; we want them to choose us. In terms of people who live here, we want to give them more of a reason to participate in what the town has to offer. So, I guess it’s a two-pronged approach.”
