New director expanding La Red Health Center’s pediatrics unit

Dr. Marisel Santiago is Director of Pediatrics for La Red Health Center.

La Red Health Center’s pediatric unit has grown rapidly over the last few years. But when Dr. Marisel Santiago first started at LRHC, there had never even been a pediatrician with the company.

As La Red Health Center’s first pediatrician in 2012, Dr. Marisel Santiago has helped the company in expanding its pediatric population. With offices in Georgetown, Seaford and Milford, La Red Health Center is up to three full-time pediatricians and is still accepting new patients.

As the newly-appointed Director of Pediatrics, Dr. Santiago has plans to continue expansion and integrate the pediatrics unit across all three of  LRHC’s primary care offices, with the Milford office being the latest addition to the company in 2015.

“Recently we opened a third office in Milford because we had a lot of patients in Milford saying the offices were too far for them,” Dr. Santiago said.

In addition, the opening of LRHC’s 6534 square-foot-facility in Milford, which is the only ambulatory care, sliding fee safety net provider in northern Sussex County will help fill a health care void and ensure access to high quality healthcare — including behavioral health care, for the residents of northen Sussex County.

All three primary care facilities offer pediatric services on a daily basis, and the Georgetown office stays open until 7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, in order to provide additional care for pediatric patients.

Earning her Doctor in Medicine from the Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic, Dr. Santiago is bilingual. Being bilingual has served her well working in the Sussex County area for the last few years.

In addition to overseeing the pediatrics at LRHC, Dr. Santiago conducts a prenatal class on the first Friday of each month from 12 to 1 p.m. While the class began as a class for pregnant teens, Dr. Santiago opened the class to any women in the third trimester of pregnancy.

“I give them a lot of information,” Dr. Santiago said of the class. “It’s really good, I enjoy it and patients enjoy the class very much as well.”

The class has been so successful, that she’s already considering adding additional classes.

“As of right now it’s one Friday a month, but it will probably end up being more than that. I wouldn’t mind doing it weekly.”
