Quality, consistency are key for Fortunata’s Bakery

Few aromas are more enticing than the smell of freshly-baked bread.

Your first bite into bread that’s straight out of the oven definitely makes anyone’s short list.

Local residents who have found Fortunata’s Bakery in Milford often return every week to re-experience both sensations.

Located at 602 SE 4th Street, just east of the Marshall Street intersection, the bakery is open Thursday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sundays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Our customers know we are consistent,” said owner Ruth Clifton. Fortunata’s bread dough, she added, is sugar and fat free and made from scratch nightly.

“They come and they buy rolls from us knowing they are nice and fresh. Same size, same shape and they know it was baked the same day. We don’t sell anything that’s day-old.”

Fortunata’s celebrates its one-year anniversary March 12, and customers that day will have a chance to sample some of the bakery’s many offerings. Daily Fortunata’s staples include bread, rolls, sticky buns and scones. Point rolls, sometimes referred to as torpedo rolls, are a customer favorite, Ms. Clifton said.

While Fortunata’s is readying for just its first anniversary, the bakery’s location and its proprietress are likely familiar to many longtime locals.

Prior to becoming Fortunata’s, the establishment was known as Bread and Butter Bakery under then owner Armand Argenio. It was as a baker’s apprentice for 15 years under Armand – a now-retired fourth generation Italian-American baker originally from Philadelphia – that Ms. Clifton and her family learned the trade.

“Armand is a south Philly baker since he was 12, and he’s one who learned everything he could about baking,” Ms. Clifton said. “So he taught me all about fermentation, high protein, patent flours … I learned how to mix the doughs from him”

During business hours, Fortunata’s stays stocked in many of its popular items, but Ms. Clifton encourages customers seeking larger orders to call the bakery at 302 422-5462.
