Blood bank: Donation need ‘critical’ after ‘depleted inventory’ before Superbowl weekend

DELAWARE – As Americans prepare to celebrate what many term our “unofficial national holiday,” local hospitals are in desperate need for blood to satisfy current patient needs and in anticipation of possible traumas this weekend, according to the Blood Bank of Delmarva.

“Winter is historically a challenging time for blood donation,” said Director of Marketing and Community Relations Michael Waite. “Going into this weekend it’s an even bigger challenge as there are several patients in our region requiring large amounts of blood. “

“Add to that, the complications from cold and flu season, the recent record snowstorm and the anticipation that accidents could occur this weekend, hospital orders are high. That’s why we’re asking the public for their assistance these next few days. We could really use the help.”

Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome and will be taken as quickly as possible. To schedule an appointment, visit www.DelmarvaBlood.org or call 1 888 8-BLOOD-8. You can also schedule through our free mobile app.
