Local store employee flees assault during armed robbery, Milford man arrested

MILFORD -The Milford Police Criminal Division arrested and charged a 33-year-old Milford man June 20 after an armed robbery occurred at the Market International Store located in the double digit block of S. Walnut Street.

Jose R. Garcia was charged with two counts of robbery in the first degree, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, kidnapping in the second degree, aggravated menacing, possession of a deadly weapon by person prohibited, tampering with physical evidence, attempting escape in the second degree, terroristic threatening, assault in the third degree and criminal mischief under $1,000.

Garcia allegedly walked into the Market International Store and made contact with the store employee, brandishing a knife while telling the store employee that he would kill her if she didn’t provide him with all of the money in the store.

After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money from the employee, he grabbed her by her neck and dragged her to the back of the store while saying that he planned to sexually assault her. She was able to break free as Garcia got her to the back of the store.  The victim began to flee out of the front door.

Garcia then fled on foot but was later apprehended by Milford police as he was attempted to hide in a shed behind a nearby residence located on SE 2nd Street. Milford police later recovered a portion of the money that Garcia had attempted to hide after the armed robbery.

While in custody at the Milford Police Department, Garcia attempted to flee from the holding cell through the ventilation system in the ceiling. Garcia also attempted to make weapons out of items in the holding cell in order to use the weapons to attack Milford officers when they enter the holding cell.Milford Police took custody of the weapons prior to Garcia being able use them.

Garcia was also wanted on active warrants from Milford police for failure to verify as a registered sex offender and was also wanted on active warrants by Georgetown Police. Garcia was arraigned and committed to SCI in default of $104,250.00 cash bond.
