Meet Downtown Milford’s force during Third Thursday

MILFORD — Does Milford have the downtown you are looking for?

Downtown Milford, Inc. hopes the community will come out to meet the force, or the merchants, that help make downtown vibrant during this month’s Third Thursday, May 17 from 5–8 p.m.

Costumed characters from the 501st Legion First State Garrison will help give the evening a Star Wars theme as they wander Walnut Street, meeting fans young and young at heart.

“Since 1997, the costuming organization known as the 501st Legion has spread the magic of the Star Wars genre worldwide through its authentic-looking costumes and has become the leading force in fan-based charity events,” according to their website.

Local DMI volunteer Sharon Walls-Hall says the street will be closed not only for the upcoming Third Thursday, but every Third Thursday throughout 2018 to help people feel comfortable in spending the evening in downtown Milford.

“I am really excited about this one. A lot of people love Star Wars, so we’re happy to bring it to them,” she said. “Darth Vader himself might even come out to dance to soundtrack music near Maggie’s shop [Milford Antiques and Friends]. And everyone is encouraged to wear their own costumes, too.”

To highlight the fun, both Dolce Bakery and Coffee Shop and Petite Sweets will be tailoring some of their products to the Star Wars theme.

A scavenger hunt will also make the evening more fun for attendees. Everyone who turns in a sheet after finding five images in a row from local window displays can be entered into a raffle for a gift.

Food trucks, a Third Thursday staple, will return so community members can enjoy an evening out on the town.

“It’s just a fun time. The merchants need the community as much as they want us, so it’s a win-win,” Ms. Walls-Hall said. “And this one is going to be especially fun.”

The Mispillion Art League and Gallery will also participate during Third Thursday by having art activities out for children to do for free. Gallery 37, just doors down the street, will feature an “out of the world/galaxy and celestial theme,” and other merchants will team up with the event over the next several weeks.

“I’m excited for this one, too,” Katie Coenen of Red Bandana said. “There are so many Star Wars fans. We’re just glad to be here for them.”
