People’s Place II names 13-year employee as new executive director

MILFORD — People’s Place II has named a new executive director effective March 12, 2018.

First hired in March 2005 as an executive assistant, Mamie Charest of Dover has now worked for the organization for 13 years. In March 2007, she became the director of administration, followed by a promotion to associate director of support services in March 2017.

Prior to working for People’s Place II, Ms. Charest graduation from high school in Texas and joined the Air Force. She was stationed in Dover, Del. from 1995 to 2002 as a part of the finance and accounting squadron, according to Kim Rigby of People’s Place II.

Her husband, Ron, is also a veteran. Together, they have two children and two dogs. Ms. Charest earned her Master’s in Business Administration from Wilmington University.

What services are provided by People’s Place II in the community?

”We provide so many different programs. And it’s underfunded. We have three domestic violence shelters and all of those shelters are normally full. We have help for kids in foster care and a group home for girls that has eight beds, but is normally full. We help with mental health needs in the community. For that, we take insurance, but also have a sliding scale for those who need it. We provide victim mediation services. I could go on and on about the services we provide. We have a veterans service and independent living program for kids in foster care, too.

I think we provide an amazing value to the community. The need always far surpasses what we can do. We do the best with what we have.”

What is your hope as executive director?

“My number one priority is to build collaborative relationships in our community that will allow us to work together. We also need to work with other partners in the community to secure funding, and sustainable funding, as state funding is vulnerable.”

What do you wish the community knew about People’s Place II?

“I wish they knew the breadth of our services. Most of what people know of us seems to be for one service or another, but we offer a continuum of services. People are always surprised when I start talking about all that we do.”

Tell us about yourself?

“My number one hobby is that I’m a mom of two young children. We like to travel, go camping, be outdoors… I like photography and we have two dogs.”
