Dr. Phyllis Kohel says, ‘Enough!’

By Phyllis Kohel
Milford School District Superintendent

[Editors note: Dr. Kohel’s submission is in response to a Letter to the Editor published on page 6 of the July 1, 2015 edition of the Milford Chronicle by Robert Jacobs, “Congratulations Class of 2015”]

Enough! I’ve sat back long enough while certain community members have blamed the school and district administration, the Board, and me for all of the woes in this district.

That’s fine; I don’t like it, and I believe that many of the beliefs and accusations are unfounded, but when you start attacking our students and calling them uneducated and illiterate, I have to respond.

Really, you base your judgment of this class on 10 questions?  And, did you ask Milford students or Cape students; you accuse Milford students of not knowing the answers to your questions, yet you state that you surveyed 50 Cape students.  Do you know our students?  Have you read any of the papers and learned of their great accomplishments? I doubt it.

How can a class of uneducated illiterates, as you call them, bring in over $5,000,000 in scholarship money.  I don’t think that was based on just their good looks.  Did you read the recent article on 2015 graduate, Dustin Reeder, who was accepted into the United States Coast Guard Academy, located in New London, CT?  Would you like to know that members of this year’s class were accepted at Penn State, University of Pittsburgh, Towson, UMES, Loyola, UVA, Berklee College of Music, and more?  Probably not, but I’m proud of our students.

Did you know that 38 of the graduating seniors earned a cumulative total of 296 college credits while attending Milford High School?  Do you think that the 7 students passing the ASFAB and going into the military are uneducated?   Please!

If you’re frustrated by the fact that we’ve gone out for two referenda and you don’t want your taxes raised, then join the club.  Call me, tell me how we don’t manage our money, tell me whatever you want, but lay off of our students!
