Battery powers Milford to 9-10 Softball Dist. 1 championship

SMYRNA – Battery mates Mya Cherneski and Mya Jones provided all the power Milford’s 9-10 Softball all-star team needed Friday night.

Playing Camden-Wyoming in a rubbermatch to decide a District I champion and earn a spot in the state tournament in Millsboro, Milford got a 13-strikeout performance from Cherneski and four-RBI off Jones’ bat to win 5-2.

Milford will play again Tuesday in the opening round of the state tournament versus the District II champion.

Trailing Camden-Wyoming 2-1 in the top of the fourth, Milford loaded the bases with two outs and Jones cleared them all with a double to right-center. GiGi Dorell, Ashley Bullock and Cherneski all scored on the two-base hit that put Milford in the lead 4-2.

Jones again came up with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth and provided Milford with an insurance run on a sharp single off Camden-Wyoming pitcher Peyton Shields’ shin. Cherneski, however, wouldn’t need it, as she struck out the side in the home half of the fifth and windmilled a scoreless sixth for the complete game victory.

Pitching every game for Milford, Cherneski finished the District I tourney with 74 strikeouts.
