Burn calories, support a cause with Reindeer Stampede 5K

MILFORD – Need some extra motivation to run off those Thanksgiving calories?

How about helping out a pair of division winning cross country teams while hitting the course?

The Milford High cross country boosters will host the 17th Annual Reindeer Stampede 5K or mile walk on Saturday, Nov, 28, rain or shine at the Millponds Nature Preserve at Abbott’s Mill. It is the largest fundraiser for the school’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams, which receive very little funding from the district.

“It’s our No. 1 fundraiser and without it we wouldn’t be able to do a lot of what we do for the kids,” cross country head coach Bob Spath said. “We get the kids t-shirts, hoodies, sometimes its food and water for away meets. Just things we need to keep us going.”

“We provide stuff like shoes for the kids in need of them with some (of the raised money),” added event organizer Lance Skinner. “This year both teams won the (Henlopen) South and we bought them hooded sweatshirts that acknowledge the championships. They put a lot of effort into it and wouldn’t have gotten anything if not for the Reindeer Stampede.”

Check-in for the race is from 9-10:10 a.m. with the event scheduled to begin at 10:15.

Pre-registration costs $15 and forms can be downloaded at www.eteamz.com/mhscc. Registration the day of the event costs $20.

All pre-registered entrants will receive a long sleeve t-shirt, while race day and late registrants will get one if/while supplies are available.

Multiple divisions decided by age groups ranging from 10-under through 70-over will be competing in the race. Top three finishers in each division receive handmade wooden reindeer trophies.

“We’re averaging a little more than 200 runners/walkers (per event),” Skinner said. “People come out to get a good day’s exercise after Thanksgiving dinner and support the cross country teams.”

“It’s a community event,” Spath added. “And a nice time for alumni to come back and reunite.”
