Milford athletics: Week in review (Jan. 22-Jan. 27)

MILFORD – As we approach the end of January, the winter sports season is beginning to ramp up for the playoff season.

All of Milford’s winter sports programs had at least two games/matches this week, with the wrestling squad competing on four of the last six days.

Here’s a brief recap of the week’s action.

Boys’ basketball

Head coach Bob Spath’s squad had a busy week, playing a total of three games over the last five days.

Tuesday, Jan. 23 the Bucs traveled to Georgetown to take on Sussex Academy, coming away with a 65-35 victory.

Tyreke Benson (13 points), Terrell Gibbs (12 points) and Daniel Shockley (10 points) each hit double-digit scoring totals in the win over the Seahawks.

Thursday’s match-up against St. Thomas More (7-6) ended in a 60-45 loss. The STM Ravens used a 25-point third quarter performance to pull off the 15-point victory. Junior Jaxson Turner led the scoring with 12 points.

Milford’s busy five-day span ended Saturday with a 65-58 road loss at Woodbridge.

The Bucs battled back from a 48-21 halftime deficit, out-scoring the Blue Raiders 37-18 in the second half (and 19-6 in the fourth quarter), but it wasn’t quite enough as they fell just seven points shy of a win.

Parker Chandler put up a team-high 15 points in the loss.

Girls’ basketball

The girls’ squad played a pair of games this week, playing host to Sussex Academy Tuesday night and then traveling to St. Thomas More Thursday.

Kalaysia Reynolds put up a team-high 17 points in a 61-31 loss to Sussex Academy Tuesday, with Haleigh Baker adding another 13 points for the Lady Bucs.

Reynolds was also the leading scorer in Thursday’s showdown with St. Thomas More, scoring seven of the team’s nine points.

Swimming

Both swim teams went 1-1 this week, falling to Caesar Rodney Tuesday, Jan. 23 (boys 42-125, girls 37-132) and picking up a pair of wins against Lake Forest Thursday, Jan. 25.

On the boys’ side, Milford won eight of 11 events in a 105-54 win over Lake. The win improves the squad’s season record to 3-5.

Freshman Mason Sauers won a pair of individual events (200 individual medley and 100 backstroke). Junior Ben Sobota (50 freestyle), junior Ryan Mackesey (100 freestyle) and junior Stone Davis (100 breaststroke) also picked up individual wins.

For the girls, Milford won six of 11 events in a 106-63 win over Lake. The win puts the Lady Bucs at 4-4 on the season.

Senior Sydney Millman won a pair of individual events (50 freestyle and 100 freestyle). Senior Brianna Wells (100 backstroke) and freshman Sophia Williams (100 breaststroke) also picked up individual wins.

Wrestling

Two of Milford’s three dual-meet wrestling matches this week were against Henlopen South opponents.

In Monday night’s tough 38-37 loss to Laurel, Milford earned wins in seven of 14 weight classes.

Robbie Rosser (120), Khiry Hovington (152), Gage Copes (170), Bevensky Augustin (195) and Anthony Diaz (285) each earned pins for the Bucs in the one-point dual-meet loss to Div. II Laurel.

Wednesday night against Lake Forest, Milford used pins from nine wrestlers to record the 74-0 shutout of the Spartans.

In the team’s third dual-meet in five days, the Bucs fell short against Dover, 35-28, Friday night.

Even after three dual-meets in five days, the week wasn’t finished for the Bucs. Saturday, Jan. 27 the squad placed first in the Legacy Duals at Hodgson Vo-Tech. The Bucs were one of 10 schools competing in the upstate event.
