Milford earns trip to field hockey state tournament

STATEWIDE – After a two-year absence, the Milford field hockey team is going back to the playoffs.

Milford (9-5-1) earned the No. 15 seed and will open the tournament versus No. 2 Wilmington Christian ( 14-1) at Montessori School Tuesday, 2:30 p.m. The winner will play in the quarterfinals against either No. 7 Middletown (12-3) or No. 10 Dover (10-4-1).

Along with Milford and Dover, three other Henlopen Conference teams reached the field of 16. All have round one home games.

Four-time defending state champion Cape Henlopen (15-0) is the tournament’s top seed and will host No. 16 Brandywine (11-4) on Wednesday, 2:30 p.m.

On the Lady Vikings’ side of the bracket is rival Polytech (12-2), which earned the No. 4 spot and will open the same day and time versus No. 13 Ursuline (10-4-1).

Henlopen South champ Delmar (12-1-1) is the field’s No. 3 team and will play Tuesday, 2:30 p.m., against No. 14 Conrad (10-4-1).

Sussex Tech was 16th in tournament points but was bumped from the field by Brandywine, which earned an automatic bid as the Blue Hen Flight B champion. Lake Forest and Brandywine finished in a 17th place tie.
