Milford will host tourney games in both boys’ and girls’ hoops

STATEWIDE – The Milford boys’ and girls’ basketball teams each knew they would be playing in the postseason.

Friday afternoon the Buccaneers squads found out who and where.

After winning the Henlopen South, the Bucs boys narrowly missed out on a first round bye. Instead they finished as the tournament’s No. 9 seed and host No. 24 Howard (10-10) on Wednesday. If Milford (14-6) wins there it would travel to No. 8 St. Elizabeth (14-6) Friday for a second round matchup.

All first and second round games are scheduled to be played at 7 p.m. From the quarterfinals on, games will be played at The Bob Carpenter Center in Newark. Quarterfinals are scheduled for March 6, Semifinals March 10 and the championship game March 12.

South rivals Woodbridge and Laurel are also in the tournament. The No. 7 Blue Raiders (16-4) are at No. 16 St. Andrew’s (10-10) and No. 18 Bulldogs (12-6) at No. 15 Middletown (10-10) on Wednesday. Other Henlopen Conference teams with first round games are No. 13 Cape Henlopen and No. 22 Caesar Rodney.

The top eight teams in the field of 24 earned first round byes. In order they are: Sanford, William Penn, Dover, Mt. Pleasant, Smyrna, St. Georges, Delcastle and St. Elizabeth.

On the girls’ side, Milford (14-6) earned the No. 14 seed and a Tuesday home game against No. 19 Delmarva Christian (13-7). If they Lady Bucs win they will play at No. 3 Sanford (16-4) Thursday in the second round.

Also as is the case with the boys’ tournament, the top eight seeds in the 24-team field earned first round byes. In order they are Ursuline, St. Elizabeth, Sanford, Concord, St. Thomas More, Caravel, Caesar Rodney and Hodgson.

South champion Woodbridge (14-6) is the No. 11 seed and will host No. 22 A.I. duPont in its opener. Rival Lake Forest (13-7) is also in the field and will begin play at No. 12 Dover (9-10).

Henlopen North teams No. 16 Smyrna and No. 17 Sussex Tech will meet in the first round, as will No. 9 Sussex Central and No. 24 Cape Henlopen.
